Telling Difficult Stories with Laura Packer
TELLING DIFFICULT STORIES
Sunday December 8th
Taught by Laura Packer
Class is limited to 15 students
(This class is for adults 18+)
Sharing stories of adversity and challenges gives us a chance to heal and help others heal, but how we tell these stories and where makes the difference between something harmful and something transformative. Dig into how to talk about difficult topics; metaphor; caring for the audience; telling stories with sexuality and/or violence; and the line between therapy and performance. You will leave the class with a deeper understanding of how to tell your story, your goals, and how to keep the audience safe and able to listen. Many participants will leave with a ready-to-tell story.
Who should take this class? Storytellers and other narrative artists with some experience performing in front of an audience. Storytelling basics will be briefly reviewed, but the focus of the class is digging deep and finding your authentic voice while keeping the audiences’ needs front and center.
Please note: All participants must agree to keep the class space safe for all. This includes but is not limited to honoring pronouns; keeping confidences; respecting other teller’s needs; taking care of yourself as needed; content warnings; etc.
